The Iron System Theme’s vision is to advance understanding of BIF-hosted iron mineralisation and to maintain a highly skilled research group that produces world class scientific papers, and assists industry in exploring for new deposits or extensions of existing deposits
It has the objective to produce innovative applied research at multiple scales from craton to micron scale emphasising a mineral system approach, in order to understand fundamental genetic processes and to improve exploration success. In addition, education of graduate students and industry geologists is one of the theme’s major objectives.
The current main initiatives are:
- World class deposits in the eastern Hamersley (such as Mt Whaleback and Area C).
- Hydrothermal-supergene BIF hosted deposits in the Yilgarn Craton.
- Genesis of Iron ore types in the Iron Quadrangle, Brazil.
