Classification of Marine Benthic Images

Western Australia

Monitoring of benthic community composition is important for the effective management of marine ecosystems.

Our collaboration with marine biologists at UWA aims to develop software to classify different benthic community groups and their percentage cover estimates using image analysis techniques. Our semi-automated workflow allows efficient automated image processing and flexible human computer interactions for manual modifications.  It aims to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the group percentage cover estimates from the currently practiced point intercept method where a number of points are randomly allocated to each image and the taxa occurring at each point is manually classified.
